“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” is a poem by writer-musician Gil Scott Heron, an influential activist who changed the world with his poetry and music. In a time when revolutions in the US and abroad were being shown on television to induce fear in the public eye, Gil Scott came out as an opponent to this bias of the media’s coverage. The logic of Gil Scott Heron’s message, namely that the media will never accurately represent the voice of the people continues unabated to this day. Now that we have infinite options in how we consume our political media, you would think this would change the terms of the debate, but no, the battle is still always framed in an “us vs them” dialogue. This design pays respect to Gil Scott’s prescient message on the voice of the people, the media’s distortion of that voice and the government who profits from it. The shirt comes with the text “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” in the center with a vintage television surrounding the words.
