SUN RA born Herman Poole Blount, legal name Le Sony'r Ra, May 22, 1914 – May 30, 1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his experimental music, "Cosmic Philosophy", prolific output and theatrical performances.  He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1979. For much of his career Sun Ra led "The Arkestra"  an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible line-up. Born and raised in Alabama, Blount would eventually become involved in the 1940s Chicago jazz scene. He soon abandoned his birth name, taking the name Sun Ra (after Ra, the Egyptian God of the Sun) and developing a complex persona and mythology that would make him a pioneer of Afro-futurism, he claimed he was an alien from Saturn on a mission to preach peace and throughout his life he consistently denied any ties to his prior identity.  His widely eclectic and exploratory music would eventually touch on virtually the entire history of jazz, ranging from swing music and bebop to free jazz and fusion, and his compositions ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians. From the mid-1950s until his death, Sun Ra led the musical collective "The Arkestra" (which featured artists such as Marshal Allen, John Gilmore, June Tyson throughout its various iterations). Its performances often included dancers and musicians dressed in elaborate, futuristic costumes inspired by ancient Egyptian attire and the space age. Though his mainstream success was limited, Sun Ra was a prolific recording artist and frequent live performer, and remained both influential and controversial throughout his life for his music and persona. He is now widely considered an innovator; among his distinctions are his pioneering work in free improvisation and modal jazz and his early use of electronic keyboards. Over the course of his career, he recorded dozens of singles and over one hundred full-length albums, comprising well over 1000 songs and making him one of the most prolific recording artists of the 20th century.  *Includes a special download card redeemable for 1 download of our choice from our DJ Mix Series.

Fuse Green is an award winning Designer and Creative Director whose bold and often humorous style has became ubiquitous with street culture. He was influenced and inspired at an early age by Soul, Jazz and Hip Hop music and culture. This inspiration developed into a deep love and passion for album art and would later become a major influence in his designs along with graffiti and comics. While still in high school he created his first design business customizing apparel and creating political cartoons for local newspapers.  He moved to Atlanta to attend the Art Institute and worked in print and sign shops which sharpened his production knowledge and intensified his thirst for excellence. He's known for contributing heavily to Atlanta's subculture renaissance as a designer who helped launch Frank Magazine and served as the magazine's Art Director for several issues. Fuse would later work as an Art Director on campaigns for Coca-Cola, Sprite, Minute Maid, and Lugz at the boutique agency Nomenudum. In 1999 Fuse moved to New York City to become Art Director/Designer at Ecko Unlimited. He went on to design for PNB Nation, Akademiks, Scion and JBL. In 2003, he founded the brand Wheat Bread Life, which served as a home base for his print works and design projects. As of late he's worked as a senior designer for Jay Z's Rocawear and served as art director for Smirnoff's Master Of The Mix reality show. While recognized for creating iconic imagery for the likes of Spike Lee, Nike, and Wu Tang Brand, He's designed over 3000 plus t-shirt designs and continues to break creative barriers. Some of his studio's current projects include Maroon 5's 2015 World Tour merchandise, graphics for Undefeated, new prints, animated shorts, and a coffee table book outlining his design career.

NEW MUSIC COLLABORATIONS

MdCL & GB "POWER TO THE PEOPLE"

"Power to the People is about activism through art. Music certainly doesn’t have to be angry, loud or noisy to embody the spirit of progress, freedom and unity - sometimes it’s the quiet ones that resonate the most. For my part, the mixtape selection is all about music with undeniable essence and substance that goes hand in hand with great artistry and reflecting the human spirit. Taking the past and recontextualizing it to the present - keeping it all timeless. On the 7” we’ve paid homage to two iconic titans of jazz - Charlie Parker and Joe Henderson - the former remixed by me and the latter reworked from scratch with an original GB interpretation. Kick back, relax and enjoy!"
